HAMBURGER CULTURE AND OBESITY


The obesity is increasing in the whole world.

In world where all is going fast, and all is raising, people are part of this process of acceleration.

The way we eat underlines this mind. As people are afraid of losing time, they go to the fast food. So the number of fast food like Mc Donald or Quick, is growing up. We can talk about “Macdonalisation”.

So we can see that the hamburger conquers the whole world.

However the wish of being thin is in contradiction with the hamburger culture.

There are two opposed streams conveyed by Media :

On one side, the propaganda of a perfect thin woman, and the slogan “eat five fruits and vegetables per day” want to make people aware of the importance of cultivate their body.

On the other side, the spreading of the fast food.

Even though the government tries to protect people from obesity by making several advertising campaigns, the number of “BIGS” is increasing.

For example, in 2005, 64,5% of US adults were fat, and people evaluated that the number of “BIGS” will grow up of 10%.

Even if we know the dangers of eating fat food quickly, the envy is stronger, and we can’t resist.

American people control the world by food…


This article dated to February 2006, writing by Alain Richman deals with culture hamburger. It is entitled 20 Hamburger you must eat before you die. This title is comic because, we have the feeling that the hamburger is essential for ours life and it fulfillment. To compare, it is similar to say “20 things you must do before you die” otherwise you fail your life.

This article makes eulogy about hamburger. It is described as a “tender” dish.

So a certain pleasure emerges from hamburger and we have envy to lick ours “chops”.

The Alain Richman’s goal must be praised this dish.

At the moment we have another thinking about hamburger: So we don’t associate hamburger to fat but as a dish which could have a significant place into ours plates. Mr Richard tries to shows hamburger’s virtue. He wants to compose 20 diferents hamburgers in order to take away the picture of “fat”. How we take away this image? Mr Richard proposes many recipes which show a side sophisticated about hamburger.

This culinary process show us that the hamburger “have more than one trick up one’s sleeve” to seduce the world.



Nowadays, obesity is becoming an epidemic, which affects a great part of American states.

In 2007, the Mississippi counted 30.6% of adults among its population, who were classed as obese.

More and more states of America are infected by this new curse.

The obesity concerns the adulthood, and the childhood.

The Fast food are not the only reason of obesity, but in many studies, it is showed that the population is getting fat when a fast food is established.

The problem is that the food which is eating in a fast food, is cooking with fat, and is steeped in oil.

The government tries to stop the process, but:

First, it can’t control people’s mind, and stop theirs impulses;

Secondly: there are still the lobbies and the Media which broadcast food advertisements.

It’s the same problem for tobacco:

The preventions on the boxes didn’t stop the smoker of smoking.

Thus, it will be the same for food, because, in a certain way, it’s a pleasure too.

A destructive pleasure.

The society is made by strange contradiction. People are actually fascinating by thin woman and slim man, and, in the front of their television, they’re nibbling.

This image of a perfect woman doesn’t correspond to the daily society, which is hurried by the fear of loosing time.

The society is changing, like Bob Dylan said “Time, they are changing”, and we can notice that in women’s magazine, there is a new “woman” who is borning:

She looks more like the woman of the XXI century, with curves, a middleweight, and doesn’t look like the top models in glazed paper.
